DECORATING WITH FLOWERS

The giving and receiving of flowers is one of life’s simpler pleasures – and still one of its most enjoyable.   Perth florist, Sarah McMillan of Beautiful Bunches, has some hints on making the most of your flowers.
“Stems need to be trimmed often as they can seal up, which prevents the flow of water and nutrients. After buying or receiving flowers, the stems should be trimmed by one to two centimetres before being placed in a vase.    The general rule is to cut straight on soft stems and at an angle on woody stems, such as roses and hydrangeas. The ends of these woody stems should then be bashed with the scissors to open them up.Tulips need to be cut often as they are the only flower that continues to grow after cutting.”
All arrangements from Beautiful Bunches florist in Perth include a packet of water enhancer. which will help the flowers last longer.Adding a tiny amount of household bleach to the water also acts as a water enhancer.Any leaf growth that is under the water should be cut off to prevent them from rotting. This will prevent algae from growing.Every couple of days, the water in the container should be changed.
Flowers don’t like direct sunlight, and should not be too close to a heater or fire.
Perth florist, Beautiful Bunches’ Sarah McMillan said that different flowers needed to be handled in different ways.  The stems of gerberas for example, should be trimmed one centimeter and then placed in seven centimeters of boiling water for about 10 seconds.Air bubbles will emerge from the bottom of the stems.Place the flowers into cool water after that to enable them to recover.
Droopy roses can also be encouraged to revive, which should not happen if they’re from Beautiful Bunches !  If roses are drooping, cut at least 3 centimetres off the stems and place in boiling water for 30 seconds.  Then place in cool water to refresh.
“If you’re lucky enough to receive fresh roses, place them in iced water for ten minutes, then put into boiling water for 30 seconds to scald the stems. The stems then need to be cut on the angle with a good pair of scissors or a sharp knife.
Flowers with milky stems should be singed at the bottom using a match.Hairy stemmed flowers, for example. gerbera daisies, should not be fully immersed in water. They should be placed in water about seven centimetres deep.
If you haven’t received a flower delivery, and are doing an arrangement yourself using oasis, here are some helpful hints. The block of dry oasis should be put into a container of water big enough to hold the whole block.  Let it absorb water and sink on its own.  If you submerge it, an airblock will form in the centre and flowers will die prematurely.
Beautiful Bunches has been on the Perth florist scene for many years and has established a reputation for quality, personalised service and attention to detail.  If you’re lucky enough to receive a special bunch of flowers, take note of the hints and tips and your flowers will last a surprisingly long time.
